The Gathering Place is a non-profit day shelter, located at 1535 High Street, that serves women who are experiencing life challenges ranging from homelessness, to poverty and domestic crisis. Today the organization serves an average of 300 women a day and for many, the facility is a resource to help with their acute needs and serve as a safe place of refuge to rise above and move forward. Current services include hot meals for breakfast and lunch, personal client care (including showers, laundry, and nap rooms), emergency clothing and food from the Betsy’s Cupboard program, General Educational Development classes, and child care services while mom is receiving the needed personal care.
Unfortunately, at the time of design the issue of homelessness and poverty was on the rise, pushing The Gathering Place to its limits of how many they might serve. As an organization they were looking to expand their services and programs to keep up with this growing population. The expansion included razing their current building and replacing it with a structure that would be able to accommodate their future demands, and remain intimate enough to retain the feeling of a safe and warm home that stayed sensitive to the immediate neighborhood fabric.
BURKETTDESIGN created a design that not only was responsive to the needs of the client, but also pushed the technologies of “green design” that harnessed its natural contextual resources, which ultimately benefited both our environment and the client’s future life cycle cost.
